A Glass Act
By:           Kim and Jeremy   |   Nov 15th, 2015

Stage:    Stained Glass    |    Week 50

Story: We would not have believed it possible to find someone that could make such magnificent stained glass windows right here in Chilliwack. Even in these days of strict regulation, Jack was able to construct enormous, leaded, Gothic and round stained glass windows that comply with all the restrictive building codes now in place. In fact, the stained glass windows we had made are triple glazed and so more energy efficient that the other windows in the house.

The process of constructing a stained glass window is quite a bit more complicated than you might think. It is a tremendous amount of work. We found, though, that the process of design is equally challenging. Jack was terribly patient with us as we went through many different ideas and options. We finally narrowed down the design to a few ideas and Jack made a sketch for us so we could make a final choice. Here is the sketch...

Once the designs were chosen, construction began. Kim went down to Jack's shop to make some images of the windows being made...

Every part of the process is delicate and precise....

And then came installation. What a process... The windows were incredibly heavy and very big. I am just amazed that Jack was able to install them without any breakage at all. Take a look...

In a heart-breaking turn of events, Jack discovers that some of the powder used in the construction of the windows had shaken loose during transportation to our home. The powder spread a cross the window in a white line on the INSIDE of the window. So, crestfallen but determined, Jack took the window back to the shop, opened it up, cleaned it again and brought it back to the house for re-installation... all on the same day. A heroic effort....thanks Jack!

And after all the windows went in, a well-deserved, outstanding Czech beer was in order.

And all the while, Jacko looked on from the well-worn passenger seat of Graham's truck....
