The Chilcotin....
By:         Jeremy Jackson   |    September 21, 2014

Location:   Fishem Lake    |    Taseko Lake Area

Story: On a recent trip to the Chilko Lake area in the magnificent Chilcotin region of BC, I camped with a friend at a most beautiful place on Fishem Lake. On the first evening, we saw grizzly and wolf tracks just a few yards from our camp. Later in the week I woke at 2 am to hear wolves howling in the cold night. For a whole week we explored glacial lakes, high alpine, old mines and the many beautiful lower lakes in the region. On our last night, I woke at 4:30 am, went outside in the pitch dark and found my way to this spot on the shore of Fishem Lake. The moon was rising and the lake was calm. For nearly an hour I made numerous exposures with the camera pointed roughly in the direction I had chosen the day before.

The image below is a single exposure of the night sky taken at about 5 am on September 20th. For me it captures the essence of this place. It feels remote and wild. Just like the fabulous valleys, lakes and mountains of the Chilcotin.

Images of dark subjects are often better viewed on dark backgrounds. The image is presented below on a white background but if you use your mouse to rollover the image it can be viewed on a black background. Please enjoy the image.

Technical Details: This is a single image made with the Nikon D800E and the 24-70, f2.8. The exposure was made for 13 seconds at f4 and ISO 1600. The focal length was 24mm but the image you see here was cropped to about 28mm. The colour in the sky was not discernible to the naked eye but the many stars were clearly visible in the sky and reflected in the lake. Only a few minutes after this image was made, pink and magenta clouds began to become visible to the naked eye. As the morning progressed, the colour became more vibrant until it disappeared about 30 minutes before sunrise. The moon is over exposed in this image. I did make another exposure for the moon but decided not to use it in the final image.
